Cinderella, A History

Cinderella has quite a history as a story and in cinema. This article provides us with a glimpse back.

On May 24, 1899, “Cendrillon,” a fairy tale in four acts by Jules Massenet set to a French libretto by Henri Caïn, premiered. In this opera, Julia Guiraudon played Cendrillon—and like a true happily ever after, she later married Caïn. There’s no image of Cinderella from this time, but her fairy godmother, as seen in this poster, looks dramatically different than the sweet older lady we’re accustomed to. Learn more.
