Periwinkle in the Park — Kathleen E. Kovach
The setting for my story, “Periwinkle in the Park”, one of the stories in Bouquet of Brides, is two-fold. 1910 Estes Park is where my heroine, Periwinkle Winfield, lives. But above the town, deeper into the mountains, is a large area that will someday become Rocky Mountain National Park, that is, if Peri has anything to say about it.
A decade into the 20th century, Estes Park, nestled into a valley 7522 miles above sea level, was just coming into its own. The smattering of homesteads had been overshadowed by a bona fide town, and lodges took precedence over much of the businesses to accommodate the influx of tourists. Many of those tourists where game hunters, who, much like prospectors, were in search of the next golden vein,. They found it in the mountains rising above Estes Park.
Anyone who knows the park equates it with the hundreds of elk that roam freely. They even take over the town of Estes Park during certain times of the year. But there was a time when there were less than a dozen elk in the area, pre-park establishment. The news of excellent game had travelled as far as Europe and hunters visited in droves, nearly wiping out the elk population. Peri has a special interest in the majestic beasts due to an event in childhood featuring another strong, yet vulnerable, animal. This fuels her desire to protect the land, preserve the flora and fauna, and repopulate the elk.
I hope I share my love for this part of Colorado effectively. I currently live where I can look to the west and see the mountains rise from the plains in true purple majesty. And from there, I declare: I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. -Psalm 121:1-2
